This Burmese Lacquerware Offering Vessel – known as “Soon Oak” is used for taking gifts of cooked food to the monastery and for displaying the offerings on alter tables within the temples. This Vessel is hand crafted lacquerware.
The shape of Soon Oak bares a resemblance to a Stupa. It is made up of 5 pieces: the bottom stand and a bowl that sits on the stand, a plate that fits onto the bowl and the lid. The last piece is the spired stem attached to the lid.
Hand crafted traditional Burmese lacquerware takes a long process. Each piece goes through repeated process of lacquer coating and drying in the underground cellar to obtain a durable and smooth surface. Next, a skillful male artist engraves a pattern and a female artist hand-paints on the engraved pattern using different colors.
